Some 20%+ of CO2 emissions in the UK originate from road transport and the average UK driver emits around 4 tonnes of it each year – if you want to visualise that, it’s the equivalent of filling a squash court with pure CO2.
The actual emissions you personally make will depend on the mileage that you drive, the size of your engine and thus how many litres of fuel you use. Every litre of fuel you use gives off CO2 – as an example, a 1.4 litre car produces around 3.12 tonnes in a year. But we can cut these emissions by slowing down a bit and sharing car journeys with other people, so that fewer cars are on the road.
